So we’re almost at the end of another year - what a total freaky time warp this whole thing has been. If you’re one of those people who spent all of 2016 playing around with your brand, and throwing spaghetti at the wall, wondering why not much of it was sticking, I want you to know that it’s okay.

Maybe your brand building didn’t work out the way you wished it would this year. Maybe you were scared, maybe real life got in the way, or maybe you just didn’t know where to start and spent all year trying to piece together a jumble of people’s blog posts and downloads to try and understand the process.

I totally get that jumping back into that place and trying to prepare your business for 2017 can be completely overwhelming, especially when it’s all happening alongside the holiday season. But I want you to know that now is the BEST time to take steps to build up a solid foundation for your brand next year.

 

Why?

  1. You won’t feel like you’ve wasted the first few months of the year stuck on the same rollercoaster of putting things together that don’t really work out.

  2. You can move into 2017 with a positive outlook, which can sound all a bit woo woo, but positivity in in your business really is a game changer.

  3. By taking one step in the right direction, you can begin to let go of whatever happened or didn’t happen in 2016 that got you feeling down on your biz. Sometimes the best way to stop feeling crap about something is to take a step in the right direction, not on some ‘special’ date, but right away.

Make 2017 the year you grow a brand you can be proud of.

When I speak with my brand design clients, one of the biggest complaints is that they feel like their brand isn’t good enough, and it’s holding them back from launching products, offering services, and putting themselves out there.

They’re not proud of what it looks or feels like, so they hide behind it and avoid offering anything that will put their sub-par brand out there, even if it means they’re not helping their peeps.

If you choose to get your brand together (starting right now!) in preparation for 2017, you’re making room for yourself to grow your business next year. If you can be proud of your brand, if you feel like your brand works for you, you’ll have no shame in putting yourself and your business out there, because you know people are going to like it.

 

Make 2017 the year that people start to know your name.

If you’re hiding away, planning launches for things and working on products or services that never see the light of day, no one out there knows who you are. You’re standing in the way of your own business by keeping things to yourself.

Branding isn’t just creating a cool design for your business. It’s developing a reputation and perception of your business in your industry and in the eyes of your audience. So if you’re not putting your brand out there, you’re not building anything!

By beginning work on building a brand that you’re happy to show off to the world ready for the new year, you’re laying some epic groundwork in preparation for growth in 2017. If you didn’t achieve what you wanted to in 2016 - and hey, I’m totally one of those people, so there’s no shame in it - take action for the next year instead of wishing it would all just fall into your lap!

 

Make 2017 the year you start out with a strong foundation and build upon it.

The foundation for any successful business and brand is a strong vision that is carried out across all areas of the business. And if you don’t have that foundation, you’re spending time building a brand that’s just going to fall apart.

There’s a story about a guy who built his brand spankin’ new house on a bunch of sand. It was super beautiful and architecturally pretty cool. But when storms and rain and wind came, the sand underneath shifted and the house came crashing down in spectacular fashion.

But this other guy built his equally epic house on a really solid rock, and when the same storms came for him, his house stayed standing, because he made smarter decisions in the first place.

This story is totally biblical, and I don’t think it got told quite like that in the Bible, BUT I think you see how it relates to branding, right?

We’re going into a new year where you have the choice to start out strong, get through all of the crap it will inevitably throw at you, and come out the other side with something even stronger. Or you can stick with the same shaky foundation you had in 2016 that stood in your way and that you kept having to rework. I know what I'd choose!

 

Make 2017 a fresh start for your business.

I’ll be the first person to put my hand up and say that 2016 has NOT worked out like I hoped for it to back in January. Why?

Because I had no real plan in place to grow my brand or create growth in my business. I had vague ideas, dreamy goals, but nothing actionable.

I know many of you have had similar stories this year, and when you get to December it’s easy to feel like your year was a massive failure, or a big time waste where you could have done so many things, but didn’t.

The awesome thing about working for yourself and building your own business is that no one gets to dictate what a success or failure is except you, and if you choose to look past the things that didn’t happen, or didn’t go to plan, and start looking to what you CAN do to make sure that 2017 has a different outcome, you can 100% make a fresh start in the new year and leave all your mistakes behind, no questions asked.

A solid brand plan that starts now can change the outcome of your 2017, and failing to put that in place for January is a fast track to having similar problems as this year.
